P, B, T and D Tongue Twisters

These tongue twisters drill the explosive consonants /p/, /b/, /t/ and /d/. In English, /p/ and /t/ start stressed syllables with a puff of air (aspiration) that many languages skip, and these phrases force that puff out.

Practice Tips

  • Hold a hand in front of your mouth: "Peter" and "picked" should each produce a small puff of air.
  • /b/ and /d/ are voiced: no puff, but your vocal cords vibrate from the very start.
  • Keep final consonants light and clean; never add an extra vowel after them.
