O inglês tem dois sons TH. Thin /θɪn/ tem o surdo. This /ðɪs/ tem o sonoro. Mesmas letras, sons diferentes. Como saber qual usar? A maioria dos livros de ESL diz "memorize as palavras". Mas existe uma regra que funciona quase sempre.
Os dois sons TH
- /θ/ - surdo: só ar, sem vibração na garganta. thin, think, math, three.
- /ð/ - sonoro: a garganta vibra. this, that, mother, breathe.
Toque sua garganta. Se sente vibração, é /ð/. Só ar, é /θ/.
A regra em três partes
1. TH em palavras-função = sonoro /ð/
Palavras-função são curtas: pronomes, artigos, conjunções. Quase todas começam com /ð/:

O grupo THR é sempre surdo: three, throw, throat, threat, throughout, threshold.
Exceções
- thy, thee, thou, thine - palavras-função arcaicas → /ð/
- booth, with, smooth - variam por falante
- Thomas, Thames, Theresa - alguns nomes próprios = /t/
- Thai - /t/, não /θ/

Quando você prevê o voicing, o sistema TH deixa de ser aleatório.
