The centering diphthong vowel sound heard in words like "care", "fair", "there", and "hair". Often called the SQUARE vowel. It starts with a mid-front unrounded vowel /e/ (like in 'bed' but slightly higher) and glides towards the central vowel /ə/ (schwa).
