Differences Between /s/ and /z/ in English: Ice vs Eyes

Published on March 1, 2026

One of the most common pronunciation problems for English learners is the difference between /s/ and /z/. These sounds are very similar, but this contrast changes word meaning.

What is the difference?

The /s/ sound is voiceless (no vibration). Put your hand on your throat and say "sssss" (like a snake). You should not feel vibration.

The /z/ sound is voiced (with vibration). Put your hand on your throat and say "zzzzz" (like a bee). You should feel vibration in your fingers.

Minimal Pair: Ice vs Eyes

Listen and practice the contrast. If you do not voice the final /z/ in "eyes," it can sound like "ice."
