Silent L in WALK, HALF, and CALM: The ALK, ALF, and ALM Patterns

Published on April 4, 2026

One of English's most surprising silent letter patterns involves the letter L. In three specific patterns, L is completely silent, and the vowel A takes on a different sound than you might expect: -ALK, -ALF, and -ALM.

The ALK Pattern: AL = /ɔː/, K is Pronounced

When you see the letters -ALK, the L is silent. The A says /ɔː/ (the "aw" sound), and the K is pronounced normally.

Complete ALK word list: walk, talk, chalk, stalk, balk, calk

Important: The word "silk" does NOT follow this pattern because it is -ILK, not -ALK. In -ILK words, the L IS pronounced: silk /sɪlk/, milk /mɪlk/, ilk /ɪlk/.

The ALF Pattern: L is Silent, A = /æ/ or /ɑː/

In words ending in -ALF, the L is also silent. The A sound varies by word:

Note: In British English, these words say /hɑːf/ and /kɑːf/ (longer A sound). In American English, they say /hæf/ and /kæf/ (the short "cat" vowel). Both pronunciations correctly drop the L.

The ALM Pattern: L is Silent, A = /ɑː/

In -ALM words, the L is silent and the A says /ɑː/ (the "father" vowel in American English):

More ALM words: calm, palm, psalm, balm, alms, embalm, qualm

Note: "qualm" /kwɑːm/ follows the pattern (L silent), though it is spelled -UALM.

Why Is L Silent in These Words?

Historically, these words did have a pronounced L sound. Over time, as English evolved, speakers began to drop the L when it appeared before certain consonants (K, F, M). The spelling was preserved from earlier forms of the language, but the spoken form changed.

This is why English spelling can seem inconsistent: it often reflects how words were pronounced centuries ago, not how they are pronounced today.

The -ALL Pattern (Bonus)

In words spelled -ALL, the L IS pronounced, but the AL still says /ɔː/:

  • ball /bɔːl/ - a round object used in sports
  • tall /tɔːl/ - having great height
  • fall /fɔːl/ - to drop down; autumn
  • wall /wɔːl/ - a vertical structure
  • call /kɔːl/ - to shout or telephone someone

In -ALL words: L is pronounced but short (you can barely hear the dark L), and the vowel is /ɔː/.
