Voici un modèle que les manuels d'anglais expliquent rarement : quand les voyelles I ou O apparaissent avant certains groupes consonantiques finaux, elles sont généralement longues. Ce modèle concerne cinq terminaisons clés : -IND, -ILD, -OLD, -OLT et -OST.
Le modèle -IND : I long
Exception : wind /wɪnd/ (le vent) a un I court, tandis que wind /waɪnd/ (enrouler) a un I long.
Le modèle -ILD : I long
Exception : build /bɪld/ a un I court !
Le modèle -OLD : O long
Les modèles -OLT et -OST
- bolt /boʊlt/, colt /koʊlt/, jolt /dʒoʊlt/
- most /moʊst/, host /hoʊst/, post /poʊst/, ghost /ɡoʊst/
Exceptions -OST : cost, lost, frost ont un O court /ɒ/.
